Arrival and meeting the family

When we arrived in Bangkok after a 13 hour flight the first problems occured on the passport control. Leo and I had to fill out an arrival card, but we couldn’t read the adress on the adress-card of our family because it was written in thai. So we went to the passport control officer. He sent us back because there was a gap where the adress-field should have been. At this moment May called me. She gave me the directions where to find them at the airport. I listened carefully to get the way to the right exit. (there were three different ones) So we decided to ask another staff member at the airport to translate the thai adresss for us so that we can enter Thailand. The next time it worked and we were in Thailand, luckily our baggages arrived as well. We got them at the baggage claim and decided to exchange some money first. The course was 38,86 Baht = 1 €. First of all we changed 100€ just to make sure that we will have enough money for our journey. Following Mays instructions we found the family of her really quick. They were waiting in front of the exit B and were so happy to see us. When I saw them I was quite happy as well, because without a local phone contract I  couldn’t  inform them about our arrival in Thailand. I got to know Mays Mum. She was called Sri and Mays Dad. He was called Eahr. They both were really friendly and open-minded. On our way to the car lot, we stopped at a restaurant and had delicious thai food.We tried octopus, scampis, other sorts of fish. For dessert we had mango with sweet rice. During breakfast we drank out of a coconutshell the freshest cocout milk I’ve ever drank. Leo and me ate a lot and were quite full after the delicious breakfast.

It was almost 5 o’clock AM. Continuing our way to the car Leo and I were hit by the temperature of 30 degrees. When we entered the car we were happy about the AC and talked about our planned journeys for the next days. Driving through suburbs of Bangkok was a fantastic way of seeing how the citizens and the places in Bangkok look like.

Leo and I were really interested in the thai architecture and liked to see all the different temples.  The family was happy to answer our questions. After one hour and 45 minutes we arrived at the house of the family. It was not even a house it was a castle build like a traditional thai house. The mate of the family carried our baggage to the guesthouse. Our rooms were two big separated rooms in the beautiful guest house next to their house. It is located next to the river “Hapen” and we enjoyed the nicest view from our balcony. When you are staying on the balcony you can see the river with a bluish water.

On the surface were floating waterplants like little spots on a beatle. The stream of the river was upside down and the boat traffic was moderate. Probably every hour a small boat, full of locals passed by.

CItytrip to Amsterdam first day

Emina and me decided to drive to Amsterdam over the weekend. We found a really cheap deal for a nice hotel near Amsterdam and started our trip on Friday after my work. The drive took 5 and a half hours, there were some traffic jams and the streets were really busy. Our navigation system guided us the whole way to our hotel. Good thing about navigation systems, couples dont have fights anymore about the streets where they are driving. So we arrived happily in our hotel which is called Park Inn Airport Hotel by Radisson Blue. It was a really nice hotel, where we lived in a doubleroom, with a nice bathroom and a huge bed.

On Saturday we decided to drive in to Amsterdam. Our hotel was 45 minutes by train away from the city center. So we used the free shuttle to the Airport, which was going every 20 minutes from our hotel. When we arrived at the Airport we figured out which card we had to buy to use the public transport system to get to Amsterdam. Our first goal in Amsterdam was to take one of the Sandemanns free Tours which started in front of the national monument at the Squaredam.

Our guide was a nice irish fellow who explained the history about Amsterdam in a really funny way. He taught us a lot about the dutch people who are really pragmatic and easygoing. During this trip we crossed the Red Light District, which is really famous in Amsterdam. Even if it’s not a good business in my opinion, Amsterdam wouldn’t be the same fotogenic city as it is now without drugs and their sexworkers. It was really interesting to hear the stories about the sailors who came to Amsterdam, about the golden era and about the whole development of Amsterdam how it is nowadays. The university of Amsterdam played a huge role in the development of the new world.

We didn’t know that before and were quite surprised when we learned that all the countrynames like Australia, New Zealand, citynames like New York and Harlem have their origin in the germanic language of the dutch people.

After the red light district we went to the jewish quarters which is a part of the city where the houses are painted in yellow and where a lot of jewish people lived in the former years.

We skipped the tour for the break and went to the Sexmuseum. It was a funny experience

and we decided to walk around in the city to check out which other sights are interesting to us. We found the Van Gogh museum really interesting and wanted to go there. After we saw the line up in front of the entry we decided to buy tickets for the next day. During the time we walked around the time passed really quick and it became dark. The fact that we wanted to see the Red Light District at night, where we thought its more busy leaded us to go there again. We did but didn’t saw a big difference. Just a stronger smell of marihuana which was everywhere in the city.

We went back to the hotel and had a Heineken the dutch beer before we went to bed.

The next day we went to the van gogh museum. During our visit we learned a lot about the paintings and the life of Vincent Van Gogh who first lived in the Netherlands, where he started to become a painter just by practicing and practicing. He started to draw self portraits, continued drawing pictures of the nature and landscapes. When he moved to France where he spent some years of his life he started to draw peasants and farmers.

Thinking about van goghs history we decided to go on a famous canal cruise when the sun came out. It was a covered boat which drove most of the time on the canal Amstel which is the river running through Amsterdam(Amsteldam). Later on that cruise we went through the small canals, crossed bridges, learned a lot about the architecture of the buildings in Amsterdam and had a good time together. Inspired by the beautiful view we took a lot of pictures out of the boat.

When the cruise was over we decided to try out one of this beautiful restaurants in Amsterdam. Our choice was an Argentinian Restaurant called Flames in the inner city of Amsterdam. We enjoyed the fod really much and headed of to our hotel after this. It was a good journey but Emina and me were really exhausted in the end. The cause why we went to bed early and slept in the next day.

We took the bus in Mostar at 11:00 am. We arrived in Sarajevo at 2 o’clock and checked-in our motel. The room is nice but there’s something strange. The toilet is in the shower. Smiley mit herausgestreckter Zunge We made a lot of fun about that already, let’s see how we are going to handle that in the morning. Smiley mit geöffnetem Mund

We went out for lunch and I tried a new dish. It’s called GRA. A soup with beans, smoked beef and vegies. It’s said to be traditional but tasted like normal bean soup. Smiley mit herausgestreckter Zunge Because a soup didn’t make me full at all I ordered a speciality from Sarajevo called Sarajanska. It tasted really good as well. 10726304_336231039882783_1253742656_n10723285_336231059882781_1847304849_n

After that we went to the mall and I helped Emina to look for some new clothes.

We will stay here for two days and our plan is to go sight-seeing and shopping in Sarajevo.

Heading from Zavidovici to Mostar

Last morning we got our bus at 7:15 after saying goodbye to the family and thanking them for hosting us for three nights. Our destination was Mostar, the city where the famous bridge is located. When we arrived there after 6 hours watching that no one steals our bags or values we checked-in in our lovely hotel room. It’s called the Muslibegovic hotel and is one part of a museum. It’s a quite interesting history behind it. We booked a whole suite just for the two of us. A bit of luxury for two nights. Smiley mit geöffnetem Mund

In Mostar we met the aunt of Emina. She was a really nice woman who lives in Croatia in Makarska next to the beach. She invited me and Emina to come to visit her next year. We had a great day with her got to meet her new husband who was an police officer and is now retired. After having a coffee with them and going to the biggest mall in whole Balkan we continued our way through Mostar alone. We went into the restaurant called Sadvar. After taking a picture with a girl in the traditional clothes of Mostar, we decided to go to another restaurant. This one was really expensive. So we did.

Daytrip to Tuzzla, dangerous return

Today we started at 6:45 from Zavidovici with a bus to Tuzzla (2 hours bus ride). On the way we drove through nice cities and villages some looked really ruined others quite modern. In most cases the population which got on the bus was quite poor. We decided to take a local bus to get a cheap trip. All in all the landscape sorrounding us was just beautiful. A lot of forests with different kind of trees, the Bosna running next to us and the clouds covering the peaks  of the mountains.

When we arrived in Tuzzla we went first to a cofee and drank a wake-up-coffee. After that we started browsing around and got to know the center of Tuzzla. DSC01368

It’s a small town where a lot of different religions live in peace together. That’s quite rare in Bosnia. They have memorials from the war all around the city in some buildings you could even see the bulletholes from the machineguns.

During our expedition through the city, I found a really nice fashion-store for men. We went in and a lady asked me what kind of clothes I am looking for. I answered in English but my German look was noticed quite fast and she started talking fluently German to me. It was really impressive because she talked with Emina in Bosnian and with me in German. She told us that she studied both languages for a long time and that one of her daughters is acutally living in Ulm. We had a good talk and in the end I bought two really nice shirts for 79,95 KM.

We spent the rest of the day in a restaurant drinking and talking.

Dangerous busride

We took the bus back home at 18:20. On the bus ride I saw a gipsy child entering the bus and said to Emina that she has to be careful of her bags. During the bus ride Emina almost fall a sleep and just in that moment the gipsy child who kept staring at us moved one seat in front of me. Emina sat up straight away and we both watched the kid. It pretendet to play and I would believe so but Emina told me later that she saw him trying to reach my bag with a hook. The thiefs are really tricky in Bosnia, they use children to steal. This time the kid didn’t have luck because Emina and me knew what he would try to do. So his (partner/mother/grandmother) came up and tried to distract us by talking to him. She failed because we were just focussing the boy and her plan didn’t get along. They stopped and changed seats. Emina and me saw from the back that the kid took the seat behind a man who was asleep. One stop the watch was gone, one stop the necklace of the woman next to him. The whole crime happened as fast as and the couple didn’t even notice. We wanted to get up and tell the bus driver but Emina told me that sometimes in Bosnia it’s organized crime. She was right, when the gipsys got off the bus the bus driver talked to them and th kid handed them some money and a silver shining thing(watch) before he continued to drive the bus. The busdriver was really creapy becaue he kept staring at us and got us on different bus stations to pay people and get plastic coppers. In the end we were alone in the bus (two tourist blond hair alone in a local bus with a creapy drug selling busdriver).  I would say we saw the best organized crime by a busdriver but i am not sure about this. Because the bus driver was that creapy we called Eminas relatives to pick us up from the bus station ( it was totally dark). When we arrived at 21 o’clock at the station we saw Jenna and were totally happy because we were still alive.

Sarajevo/Zavidovici

We arrived late in Sarajevo, got a taxi and drove to our hotel. It was called hotel Italia and was built in a really nice old italian style. We went straight to bed. The next morning we got up, had breakfast and went to the trainstation. There we met Ermina and her boyfriend. Ermina is a Bosnian friend from Emina. She actually lives in Sarajevo but her family in Zavidovici. We took with them the train to Zavidovici (4 hours ride). It was a really old train (Lokomotive) and the landscape we crossed during our trip was just amazing. There were a lot of beautiful rivers and so beautiful nature, looked like it’s out of another world. We had a good talk with the other couple and arrived in Zavidovici around 2 o’clock. We walked with Ermina to the families flat and explored the town. At the supermarket we bought groceries for our daytrips and finally exchanged our money. 50€ is around 99 KMs (Konvertible Mark).

DSC01314

We had a great time with the family of Ermina. The mother liked me a lot but she couldn’t speak English, it was really hard but I tried my best and learned a bit Bosnian basics. I can count to ten now. Smiley mit geöffnetem Mund

The next day we got to know the father he didn’t live in the house with the family, he lived up the mountain in his own house. We got a cab up there. His house was situated really nice. From his balkony you could see all of Zavidovici. He was a funny man who couldn’t speak English so Emina had to translate. During the time at his place we played chess, walked into the forest and watched hornets.

DSC01337DSC01353

All this people the family included are really poor. It’s really hard for them to afford the costs of living. Emina and me went out for dinner, lunch and breakfast everyday. One meal costs around 1-5 KM. I tried Chivape the traditional Bosnian meal. It’s sasauges made of ground beef covered in spices and served with a lapina and onions. It tasted quite good. I tried one of the national beers (Sarajevsko) as well and figured out that it tasted like Königs Pilsener so not too bad.

One day in Vienna (sight-seeing-tour)

Our alarm kicked us out of bed at 6:00 so we woke up, ate breakfast with her sister (Erna) and started to walk to the train which would get us to Vienna (Center) where all the sights are located. Our first stop was Palace Schönbrunn. We spent there one hour walking through the park and taking pictures of each other.

DSC01203DSC01204DSC01216DSC01214

I was really faszinated by the old architecture which looked like we are back in Gothic. Huge windows, creative windows frames and really big clocks on the top of the roofs.

We decided to walk to our next stop. It was the Stephansdom. A really big cathedral at the Stephansplatz in Vienna.

DSC01232 After that we had a coffee at Sarbucks.

During our walk through the city of Vienna we saw another really nice building called the Spanische Hofreitschule. Infront of it there were a lot of carriages and drivers which looked like back in the days.

DSC01238DSC01241

For lunch we went to Vapiano and in the end to the Parlament and Schloss Belvedere. It was a really nice city tour and her sister a really good tour guide.

At 20:15 we continued our trip to Bosnia and flew to Sarajevo. Smiley mit herausgestreckter Zunge

Trip to Vienna

We arrived yesterday at 22:40 in Vienna. We took one flighti later because the flight in Hamburg was overbooked. We got 125 Euros for that and flew with Air Berlin 20 minutes later. When we arrived in Vienna we had to take the train and go to Floridsdorf to meet Eminas sister whos currently living in Austria.

DSC01179DSC01180

During our train ride Emina fell asleep and I had to take care that we didn’t miss our station. When we arrived there after one hour, the sister of Emina was waiting at the train station. She walked with us to her flat and served as real bosnian Gulasch. It tasted really good. So she showed us the beds and we instantly went to bed. Smiley mit geöffnetem Mund

It was an exhausting day for both of us.

Back home

Today I got up at 4:30 to catch my flight to Hamburg. The airport in Iceland was quite small and packed with people, so I had to wait a long time. After checking-in I bought some chocolate for my family and friends to get rid of the Icelandic crones. Smiley mit geöffnetem Mund

During the flight I slept a lot and thought of how I will react when I see my family. I decided to act as I feel and so I did. There wasn’t only my family at the airport, but all of my friends, too. Smiley mit geöffnetem Mund It was really nice to return home and my friends had prepared a big welcome party for me. I was stunned and so happy. Smiley mit geöffnetem Mund I will switch back to write in German now, because I will talk German in the next few years.

Las Vegas in the pool

Yesterday night I met a really nice guy called Menetieje who lives in Orange County. Smiley mit geöffnetem Mund We had got on very well with each other and met today again. He is a filmproducer and knows a lot of people in Las Vegas, so he got me into the Rehab Poolparty for free (normally people pay up to 200 Dollars just to get in). Smiley mit geöffnetem Mund We spent there the whole day and met a lot of people. I totally enjoyed it to be part of the rich and famous people who were also at the party over the day. Smiley mit geöffnetem Mund I danced a lot ( didn’t know before that dancing in the water is so exhausting) and really enjoyed the time with Mene. Smiley mit geöffnetem Mund
